Italian Memory

Yesterday I watched many videos about stereotypes on YouTube. It’s very funny how foreigners imitate Italians. It was like I expected. When I ask my foreign friends how they see Italians they always repeat me these words: pizza, spaghetti, mandolino, mafia. I realised that I needed more information about this organisation called mafia, this Italian phenomenon. I tried to use YouTube to find some information. I wonder if our generation have an idea of the tragic events that occurred in Italy 15 years ago, in 1992. It’s extremely important to know our recent history. I think something has changed but there are still writers like Saviano who has to live under escort. Nowadays public opinion has a great influence and if we give importance to these news and facts things can change. Like a great man once said: ‘Mafia is a human phenomenon and as a human phenomenon it has a beginning and an end.’
I invite you to watch these videos. In the first one you can see some shocking photos but this kind of reportage had been broadcasted on Italian national television. So I decided to put it on my blog.

Great, indeed!

I really appreciate your choice Serena, we're Italian, e we do not know enough about mafia, because nobody talks about it, and it is a shame, because the real weapon to use against it is information!

I know this hasn't much to do with our course and the videos are in Italian but when I found this material I felt the need to share it with you all. Thank you Claudia! I'm happy you appreciated the videos.

I really, really like your post and the videos you chose to share with us, Serena.
I think we all have the duty to remember examples of honesty, dignity and hope like these.
Did you know that "The New York Times" has recently brought "Gomorra" by Roberto Saviano as one of the 100 best books published in 2007?

No I didn't know this news. I looked the New York Times web site but I didn't find information about it. Have you read it on that web site or in an Italian newspaper?

Hi Serena!
I think that it is too easy to generalize.. I mean, foreigners identify Italians as "mafiosi", I know, but this is a sign of narrowness of mind. It is true that mafia is an italian phenomenon and that it has to be fought but I think that on TV all of us saw film about it ect
